Thoughts about tonights episode:

Could Ben have time traveled from the artic station where the Portuguese guys who work for Penny are from???

Did anyone else notice that Ben was completely in black in the final scene, he even looked like he dyed his hair to match his jacket and gloves...and that Widmore was clearly lit and all white??? Made Ben look very EVIL!

Ben came from behind that new cave type underground hatch very dirty...and the first time we saw smokey he was pulling Locke down into a hole...same place?

When Ben talked to the hotel man he told us it was just over a year from the crash....almost 10 months from current island time...and that he had just come from Iraq...but when he asked for Widmores room he gave another name and it was one that sounded familiar, what was it? and why did it sound familiar???

Is Widmore the economist?

This show rocked!!!!

I was good right up until the end. Now I'm throughly confused...in the very best of ways, of course! ***Why on Earth is Ben unable to kill Widmore? They talk about it like it's a game -- and so does Ben when he calls Alex a pawn -- but that's got to be a metaphor...right?***

Kaidy, ***part 1 is the same thought I had, though I'm desperately trying to think of another theory to fit because that would be horribly tragic.***

All right, I need to walk away and think about something else for a bit. Before I go, let me second Brig and Pryce by emphatically applauding Michael Emerson, who was even more mind-blowingly amazing tonight than usual. Further applause to everyone else involved in tonight's eppy. Positively fantastic on all fronts.

Don't worry that was just brain 'sploshion

I...I...I...
am speachless for the very first time in my life,
but,I do have a thought,
Okay if Australia is the key in 'Risk'....
Is Australia Their KEY?
Is it like,All they have to do
is get back on the plane in Australia
and they can change the past or future or ....oooo brain cramp?
Is LOST just a game Ben and Widmore are playing?
Is it like 'The Bet' in "Trading Places",with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroid?
Holy Shizzzznit! My brain is all slushy after the 'splosion
LOST put it thru!

blues: i am not sure if they would go that route. i did not like that movie b/c i thought it was not done to its potential. that said, it is possible and it could explain a lot. OTOH it don't see how that would account for any of the S1 or S2 deaths. those characters didn't really choose to die.

HOLY COWBELL...

i. am. stunned.

i don't really have words yet but... RIP alex, you will be sorely missed and
dear god, i am not ready to lose Penny in this twisted little game of chess between evil Benry
&
evil-er Widmore
...

wow. maybe the best ep this season - maybe better than The Constant. big props all around to
LostLabs.
and especially huge "wow" props to Michael Emerson who is always amazing but this week delivered in
a
way I am still reeling from...

posing a question that is bouncing around my living room right now between fellow lost watchers... can
you think of a character more "evil" (in the traditional character definition sense) than Ben on
a
television series in recent memory... considering as well the fact that he has been made entirely human
by
the writers
? (not really a spoiler but this week changed that answer for me)...

back in a bit,

Now, back to the last part of tonight's eppy:*Poor Hurley, having to go so Sawyer and Locke don't shoot each other. gah! and Jack's sick and Danny lies and Bernard (again) ROCKS and WOW!*

I have some new theories...** Well, WHAT IF...Des makes it off the island...Ben is confident in his telling Widmore he can find Penny, cuz he has Sayid and Sayid can trick Des, so he can get close and *BLAP*! Penny dies...oh noes!!!!

and, also, I have a feeling, I shall see my Sawyer die, someday. Maybe this season, maybe in the next 2...but, I don't think, when it's all done, that he's gonna make it. I hope he goes as a hero...something dignifying and heroic and tragic. *sigh* Unless, some are left behind, and he's alive...with Jin. YES please?

Thanks for posting that. I love GDT, and everything about LOTR. I'm sure he & Peter Jackson will make it look just like, if not better, than trilogy as far as production and everything else.

Another good thing to look forward to. :- )

I can't say I'm as excited as everyone here today about the return of Lost. Its great that you guys have found a show that you love so much, but for me its been pretty much a downhill level of enjoyment with the show after season 2. Season 3 and the first half of this season has just been one big disspointment after another. Sadly, I find myself agreeing more and more with the folks over at **edited** than over here. But I have still watched every episode of the show since day 1, so i still consider myself a fan. hopefully tonights episode will provide material for a good discussion tomorrow. see you guys then

Hey 'Lagers! Long time, no post. Or scroll. Life hasn't exactly lent itself to such pleasures lately.

To be 99.3% honest, though, tonight's episode will decide whether or not I jump this planewreck or hold on for the rest of the ride.

I can't specify when things started to get ugly between me and my beloved. But I know that since the writing started focusing on the Others and this whole tangled Ben is the Mastermind of the Universe instead of smoke monsters, giant polar bears, hunting boar and hearing the t-rex from "Jurassic Park" on a regular basis my love has waned.

See, what first thrilled me about Lost was the raw acting and the possibility of a mainstream kind of campy sci-fi show. Each episode found our losties facing a new, weird challenge (like pilot-chomping pterosaurs or something) as a means of survival, self-discovery, etc. Then they brought in Dharma- which was cool. Dharma could have just remained this obscure organization that created a fun house island.

But they had to go and complicate things and take all the fun out of it. Remember when Locke smiled with that orange in his mouth? That's the Locke I fell in love with. Yet they killed that Locke.

Anyway.

Oh, the other 0.7%? Yeah. Even if I don't like this episode, that's the compulsion that will keep me watching until the series finale. Like that sauce they serve at Japanese steak houses. "It's kind of like Thousand Island, but not. You know I don't really like it. My God! I can't stop eating it!" And then you've consumed the entire bowl and feel unreasonably peaceful.

Season 3, then
S4
S1
S2
S5
S6
S7
S8
S9

And I would rank "Fight the Future" in between Seasons 5 & 6 I think; makes sence.

I missed your earlier reply! Umm...about you being a guy - no I guess you can't share in the hotness talk - lol. Sorry about that.

As for the films I'm looking forward to this year - there are sooooo many covering several genres.

Sci-fi/fantasy:

"The Dark Knight" I admittedly was not a fan of the Batman series - wasting my money with each installment until Christian Bale came on the scene in Batman Begins. His batman was more believable, darker and closer to the actual comics and I liked this script better than it's predecessors.

"Star Trek" I would have been looking forward to this too if they hadn't made major changes to the writing and casting. I don't have a lot of confidence that it will have the same witty and great writing the previous ones had (my faves being the original movie series of The Wrath of Khan, The Search for Spock, etc). I'm almost scared they are making it into a spoof type of thing - heaven forbid.

"The Hulk" This remake actually looks like it has been written and directed by someone who has seen the original! It was co-written by and will star Edward Norton, Tim Roth, Liv Tyler and William Hurt and it looks like it's going to be GREAT! I can't wait for this one! The other remake was ridiculous and sorely miscast (sorry Eric Bana whom I love!)

"Chronicles of Narnia" Prince of Caspian. I loved the books but the first movie was just ok for me. I'm hoping this one will be better.

Action Adventure

Of course Indiana Jones. I absolutely love Indy flicks and can't wait to see this one!

Comedy:

"Burn After Reading" a comedy starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich and Tilda Swinton written by the Coen Bros. This looks like it's going to be hilarious.

Western:

"Appaloosa" which is a western starring Viggo Mortenson, Ed Harris, Renee Zellwegger and Jeremy Irons.

Romance

"Time Traveler's Wife" if it's anything like the book, it'll be fabulous. I really hope it tranfers well to the big screen.

The movie list goes on and on.

Alas, I'm sitll patiently waiting for someone - ANYONE to do a GREAT remake of "Clash of the Titans."

Hey guys I need some help. I'm a long time reader/poster, it's just been awhile.

My friend, Katherine Wolf, fainted yesterday and when she came to she couldn't feel her legs. She was rushed to the hospital and last night had emergency brain surgery. She has a pre-existing condition known as AVM which caused a bleed in her brain. The surgery lasted 12 hours and she is currently in a drug induced coma for the next 48 hours.

Katherine's husband Jay is in lawschool with me and next week is our last round of finals followed by studying for the bar so this just adds to his stress. Katherine and Jay also have a 6 month old son who needs his mommy.

Katherine is a model/actress who has done mostly background and stand-in work.

The worst part of all this is it looks like they don't have insurance. To raise money I'm trying to put together an auction. I've got some friends who have friends in the industry and we are going to try and get some things like signed scripts, posters, props, etc - basically anything we can auction off.

**Edited**
Thanks,
Travis "Tid" Tidmore

Checking in for Lost Radio...

Also, (spoiler fonted for anyone who plays along with Jeopardy! and sees it later than 7:30 Eastern) ***there was a category where contestants had to spell their responses. One of the "answers" was something like "The part of a plane excluding the wings and the tail." The contestant correctly responded "what is F-U-S-E-L-A-G-E?" and I thought of all the lovely people hereabouts.*** It's not that exciting, but it was sort of cool anyway!

inducing our baby tomorrow on April 23, 08.

Yeah, that's right, our baby's birthday is
going to have three of the 'numbers' as her
birthday (4.23.08).

Maybe we'll name her Desmond Daniel after
our favorite characters.

Maybe not.

Regardless, it's sad that my first thought was
to post this on LOST message boards. What

Hmmm...Tangible Phantom. I would guess, maybe an Early Prog-rock kind of music.
Say like Yes or King Crimson...maybe Pink Floyd-ish or Moody Bluesy...
Oh yes, especially with an 'album' called 'Thoughts Become Things'. That's right up there with "Days of Future Passed"
or "Larks' Tongues in Aspic"
Or my personal fave album name:
"For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night"

Gage, I think it's DiamondLife who you have wanted to experience the perfect film with, not me. Then again, she disagrees with one film, I agree with it, you don't, it's an interesting cycle we have going. Maybe this is why the Oscars confuse so many people, there is rarely 100% agreement on any film, good or bad. Critics rave about some films and the public just never sees them, then the public goes in droves to another film and the critics pan it. Then add in "Old Hollywood" and you can rarely predict all categories with them, except to say that they probably won't go see scifi/fantasy or comedies and vote for them. Lord of the Rings finally broke the mold on that one, but it's a One Off and may not happen again, at least, not for a long time. I'm still waiting for the day that a comedy does well in the major categories. Who says that a 'best film' has to be dramatic, topical, educational, or 'important' when entertaining is much more enjoyable to most of the movie going public?

YuKai: I think it is somewhat wrong for you to think that because you live in LA that you have a better understanding of how the film industry works. As I have stated here before, I have a Masters in Film PRoduction, have lived in Southern California, worked on numerous films, currently work in the television industry, and am completely and fully aware of the rules, regulations and controversies that surround the awards and nominations handed out every year. You say that the Foreign Language Oscar is always the most controversial, I understand your point, but I actually always viewed the Documentary categories as being just as controversial, and just as selective. In case you haven't noticed, The Academy consistently nominates films in all categories that leave some scratching their heads in disbelief and wonderment. Take the Best Picture race this year. Some would say Juno and Michael Clayton deserved to be there. I was not one of them, but I do see why they were there. If you look at comedies, or family films, Juno was an expertly crafted film, if you look at the "little guy who takes on the world and makes it a better place" films, Clayton does it the best...it is in the craft of these films as a whole that warrant the accolades bestowed upon them, they excel in all parts, including costuming, set decoration, editing, directing, acting, cinematography -- and when you combine all of these facets and look at it as a whole, you are better able to see that all the right choices have been made. And another factor that greatly influences these decisions is the Old Hollywood way of looking at what constitutes a Best Picture...the producer. And a great aspect of the producers position is to fill all positions with the right people and to make all the right choices on behalf of the story being told. If you look at things from this stance sometimes it is easy to see why some films fare batter than others at awards time. I for one think that Once was a far better film than either Juno or Michael Clayton. It is essentially a musical and all musicals should take a look at how that story was presented and we will all be better off. But a film like Once would never be seen as a "best" if only because it is not as polished a final project as the other stated films.

But -- getting back to the foreign film...you are correct on the controversies inherent with the nominations, and had there been less stringent regulations, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly would have walked off with the award and we probably wouldn't be having this conversation...I say probably because I do not know if you have seen this film, but it was number 3 on my favorites list this year, coming in right before Once and right after No Country and There Will Be Blood....

I hope one day to actually have both of us see a film that we both regard as excellent...and I know that day is coming....soon...

Patty: It is Virtually impossible to have a better time...I'm in!

Gage, I don't know how many people outside of LA know that the Foreign Language Oscar is always the most contentious category in the field, but it is. There is controversy nearly every year, and the Academy is always changing the rules, trying to catch up with what is perceived as a flaw from the year previous, and failing to do so. Rules that govern what country can submit a film that is co-produced by more than one country, rules that dictate how much English can be spoken in a film before it is deemed to not be a foreign film, rules that state a country may only submit one film which then begs the question 'are they submitting their best, or the most politically advantageous?', rules that govern how International a cast can be before it is deemed to no longer be from the country submitting the film. Some of these rules are just ridiculous and end up keeping out many fine films from around the world, and that is where the bulk of the controversy comes from year in and year out.

My least favorite rule is the one that limits a country to one entry. That's absurd, to think that some countries with strong film industries only have one good film. As if France, Germany, Spain or Japan can only make one good film a year is insulting at best, and invariably leaves out some real gems.

So, with this past year's crop of foreign language films, there were a few not only not nominated, but not eligible. One such film that many thought should not only have been nominated, but should have been the clear cut winner is "The Band's Visit". It was not eligible because a good portion of it is in English. Well, with an Egyptian band lost in the Israeli desert, of course a good portion was in English, that was the only way for the people to communicate. They still subtitled the film because the accents were so strong. But that didn't matter to the Academy, the called it ineligible and so it was not even nominated.

So while The Counterfeiters was a completely fine film, it may well have not been the best Foreign Language film out there. I, for one, am eager to see The Band's Visit, after having missed my chance to see it last week. It appears to have vanished from the local theaters now, so I've had to put it on my Netflix queue.

Didn't mean to ramble on there, but there is more to Hollywood than meets the eye.

And no, Diamondlife was unable to go with me to see the film, she had a migraine yesterday.

YuKai: I was one of those who did not know the full extent of what happened. I was amazed that this took place. I believe it won because, not only did it tell a story that many did not know, but in the way that it was told it showed how the efforts of one to extend his own life, how he was able to "succeed" and how that success eventual took its toll, and how eventually the efforts of one turned the tide of their operation...throughtout the film there was a sense of pride in the work they were carrying out, how they longed for a sense of normalcy, and for them this was as close as they could get, and then at the later part of the film, where the actual work started to affect them in ways they didn't forsee, the pride was rewarded. It was beautifully told, extremely well executed, and how amazing it was to see the main character carrying the body of the one prisoner who just needed to wait until the end of the war...that sequence stayed with me for many days afterwards, and is seered into my memory forever...when a film is able to achieve something like that, and linger with you for days, it deserves awards. Perhaps your knowledge of the story prevented you from enjoyng it as I did. But, I know one day we will find a film that we both see and find amazing...it's coming, I know it! Did you see it with Diamondlife? and if not...

Diamondlife: Yes, you did tell me that you had seen Amores Perros...I then replied a few days later, explaining, briefly, that I'm a guy, and as much as I do like the guy, I couldn't join in the hottness factoring....he does act circles around his peers though, you are completely correct on that one.... and Yu Kai is correct, you MUST see the mini first...it is worth the watch and you will be jumping on the bandwagon with the rest of us, I am sure of that. It is great. What films are you guys looking forward to this year?

I for one am totally looking forward to The Dark Knight...I hope it is better than Batman Begins, which is by far my favorite Batman film and quite possibly my favorite superhero film, only Spiderman 2 comes close, but I never can keep one on top of the Best list for too long, the consistently trade places....

There are many films coming to us this year: Indy, Ironman, Star Trek, X-Files... and I would have to say Mulder and Scully come in 2nd for me....

Patty and Loca: Count me in for the road trip, don't know the band, you'll need to fill me in on that one...but, who cares, anywhere my fellow Dharmaknights go, I am sure to follow....

Diamondlife, I don't do Excedrin, so I never have to deal with that. I think it's funny you slept through the jets flying over head, but incorporated them into your dreams. Been there, done that.

As for Jekyll, woohoo. Glad you liked it. James Nesbitt is amazing, isn't he? I can't wait for series 2 on this one.

As for BSG, yes, you want to get the mini-series first. They briefly cover some of the stuff in the later seasons, but the first season really is a continuation of the mini-series, and I mean, and immediate continuation. If you were to watch the first ep, 33, without seeing the mini-series, you'd be completely lost. BTW, 33 rocks the house in so many ways.

Gage, finally saw The Counterfeiters. It was really good. Not amazing, like I was expecting, but then again, they told the exact story I heard it was about, nothing more, nothing less, nothing learned or gleaned. I'm not sure why it won the Academy award, it was a quality film, but not earth shattering by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe it was just considered educational to all the people who didn't know the extent to what happened in the camps in the war.
