After a long time of not being mentioned or appearing in the show, Ben mentions "the whispers" in this episode's flashback to when he kidnaps Alex from Rosseau.
Ben, as it sounded to me, seemed to mention this Whispers in the context of them signaling the presence of Others, or Ben himself.
Back when we first started hearing them, this is sort of the idea I had about them. Then after a while of the whispers occurring when no Others were around, this seemed to no longer be the case. Later they seemed to occur around dead characters, or visions of characters/things that weren't physically there.
What, if anything, did the mention of the whispers in this episode tell us?
I feel more confused about them than ever now!
This would seem to debunk people's theories on them being "echoes" from time travelers.
when he told her to stay away from the whispers I thought he was telling her to stay out of the Other's territory. Are the whispers some sort of alarm system/early warning that an intruder is in the area?
Didn't Danielle talk about the Whispers a bit back in S1? To Sayid or Hurley, I think? It might be interesting to go back and see what she said and how she interpreted Ben's words.
When Ben said this, my first thought was back to a long-time theory that the whispers are the, "chorus of the dead." I'm just about finished with one of the Lost books, "The Invention of Morel," which seems to support this theory. I thought is was fitting for this epi, because it suggests that on the island, dead, really, is not exactly dead. But that doesn't really answer your question.

Not sure if they are Others or some sort of Other controlled surveillance? But got to be related to the Others if she is to stay away from the whispers. It sounded like in his own way he was trying to help her stay alive.
I too thought the whispers might be the echoes of time travelers or the dead, but this line suggested otherwise.
Ben says if she wants to live she needs to run everytime she hears the whispers. And we know that the person that is a threat to her is Widmore (and the hostiles/othes by extension). So this line seems to link the whispers to the Others/Hostiles, which makes sense, because most of the time we hear them an Other/Hostile is in fact nearby.
This warning would also seem to explain to an extent how Danielle lived on The Island so long without running into the Others, the DI, the temple, etc. She followed the warning and steered clear of those areas where the whispers were heard.

Yeah, I think it would serve to explain that to some extent... so one positive to come out of this!
Remember back when we were first introduced to The Others/Whispers?
Like when Ecko and Jin were trekking through the jungle after Michael, and they hide in the bushes as some Others creep by.
Remember how eerie that was? Their movement reminded me of the "Ring girl" or something. Like they were supernatural beings.
As the show progressed though, the Others came to look just like normal people with adept training. But average in every other aspect.
Now that we have gotten this whole life-after-death resurrection thing, the show seems to be returning more to the supernatural realm. Maybe some who are "undead" bring out the whispers on the island... signifying that an unnatural creature is present??
It's quite a drastic shift back and forth, which is really irritating if you ask me...
