Re: The Whispers: Does this clue help or confuse?

i think addictedfan brings up the mos interesting thing about the whispers, the CONTENT of the whispers. it would be one thing if they were just inaudible whispers, then i could believe they were just heralding the arrival of the others, but these are clearly voices that are watching what's going on and having a conversation about it, but CANNOT be seen. I think with the introduction of the Temple, things are about to get SERIOUSLY supernatural here, so maybe the explanation for the whispers will have something to do with this.

Re: The Whispers: Does this clue help or confuse?

Dunno about the rest of you, but I really enjoyed the creepy supernatural qualities of the island and The Others that were presented to us early on in the series. Now that the show seems to be making a return in that direction I'm pretty happy about it
Something about the Temple and Smokey, especially now that he is linked with Anubis, is really creeping me out.
It's like an ancient other-worldly force, ambiguously evil or good... sorta like something out of a Lovecraft story.

That scene with the Malkin girl was really creepy, as were things like the original Jacob cabin scene.
I don't want it going TOO far in that direction, a la X Files or something, but I like these mysteries more than I like the whole scifi time-travel mysteries.

I agree with you beema. I like that aspect of the show. Remembering all the transcripts of the whispers from the past few years, it seems like whoever/whatever it is, seems to chatter among "themselves". If I remember correctly, there was whispering in the Niki and Paulo "death" episode too where "they" were watching and commenting.

M.A. - I hope so too. I can't wait for their explanation. I actually like it when there is whispering going on.

I like that idea, but have we seen it happen that way on the show?

Not your own death, anyones death. Are they bringing death or escorting the dead?
This could mean Ana did not kill Shannon, I knew it!

Ana did kill Shannon... there's no two ways about it
The Whispers just signaled her death I guess...?

I like this idea, but we've heard the Whispers many times when nobody has died...maybe they just mean dead bodies are around?

Re: The Whispers: Does this clue help or confuse?

All along JJ said he wanted to present the Island as a character on the show, and I think the actual show makes the island a sentient being. With this background, the whispers could be the island, its trees and other living things. The whispers could be the Island (or Jacob or Smokey) listening in to people's minds, or alternatively, if the living parts of the island (trees) are reincarnated people, Island/Jacob/Smokey could be 'talking' to them.

We do hear them at times other than when someone is about to die or is killed. Now though you have me wondering if there is a pattern to the whispers that are non-death related.
Long ago, there was a theory back in S2(before we had known as much as we do now) that Smokey always appeared during a time when someone was experiencing a high, intense level of emotion...but now I'm wondering if that is when the whispers appear.

I may have to go do a little research on whispers and when we hear them....

Well, Sawyer hears the whispers twice when chasing the boar both times after awaking from a dream about his parent's deaths.("Outlaws", S1,ep.16)

And no one dies not even the boar in this episode.

Here's one of the whisper transcripts that Sawyer hears as he's running through the jungle after the boar...

“ Female Voice- "Maybe we should just talk to him"
Male Voice- "No if he see us it will ruin everything"
Male Voice- "What did he see"
Female Voice- "They could help us"
Male Voice- "Can't trust"
Male Voice- "Come back around"
(Sawyer pauses, crickets and cicada are heard)
Male Voice- "What did he see"
Male Voice- "Nothing, he was following it"
Female Voice- "Speak"
Male Voice- "Nothing"
Frank Duckett's Voice- "It'll come back around"

The voices seem to be friendly but wanting help?? Are they trapped somehow?
