The appearance of Desmond didn't work for me. In each of the parallel lives that were shown tonight, there was a continuity... one life line following the LA flight eliminating the crash, and the other life line following the 1970's explosion.
But with Desmond, his appearance on the plane didn't fit. He was on a sailing trip trying to prove to Charles Widmore that he was worthy of Penny before he crashed on the island. That's where he should have been .. on the island.. but not in the hatch typing in the numbers.
And, he should have remembered Jack from their run in the stadium.
I don't mind the confusion, if it is balanced.. but Desmond's appearance just made the confusion annoying,.
Aww... I'm the only one who didn't like it?! I supposed the only reason I didn't like it was that I had such MAMMOTH expectations for it, but when I saw an average, run-of-the-mill LOST Ep, I was disappointed. I was really just expecting a lot more ANSWERS! What with all this ABC marketing saying "the time for questions is over." I feel like I only got more questions... which is normal for LOST... but even in S6? It's time to moooooove it along, Darlton!
Sorry but I don't find the idea of "flash-sideways" very interesting. Lindelof and Cuse claim to have had this idea for 2 years so how integral can it really be. It seems like they felt that they had to try and think of a new gimmick and this was the only "way to flash" they had left.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that they could not get all of the original cast members to come back. So what do they do? They conveniently have some things changed in the flash-sideways so they don't need to have all of the characters present.
I have very little hope that these jokers are actually going to answer the countless questions in any satisfying way. When they start claiming that Lost is really about the characters and "it's all about the journey not the destination"... it's obvious that they're trying to downplay the mysteries because they know they aren't going to deliver in the end.
New season; same old crap. Throw a bunch of pointless confusion at us, create more stupid questions that no one cares about and have about as much believability (even for the non-sci-fi stuff) as any lame drama on TV.
Now what, it’s some form of a stupid parallel universe thing after all? You’ve got people on the plane and this “Island?” But the people on the plane- their lives aren’t 100% the same as they were before (e.g. Hurley has nothing but good luck; Shannon isn’t on the plane; Sawyer isn’t all pissed off anymore about being sent back to the States; Charlie was what- trying to kill himself because he was supposed to die; Desmond somehow is on the plane, etc.).
They show us the “Island” under water (yeah, we get it, the “lost” city of Atlantis- cute- who cares), but then it’s not under water and CUT TO Kate waking up… in a tree, of course. Real funny. Jack asks for a pen to use on Charlie- again, not funny, just lame and stupid. Jacob’s nemesis (if they ever said his name, I don’t remember it and certainly don’t care enough to go try and find it), who we never even saw before the S5 finale, took over Locke’s body and is either Smokey or can at least look like Smokey. More imbeciles no one ever cared about are killed. Kate (about 5’3” and 100 pounds, with no marshal arts training) takes down a U.S. Marshall by kicking a stall door into him, a quick knee and bashes his head on the sink. Yeah, very believable. Now we have Flash-Sideways (as someone pointed out above) as this year’s gimmick, to replace FFs and FBs. That’s great. Did they ever hear of trying to tell a story that actually makes sense, that the average person with an IQ over 100 could follow without the aides of message boards, flowcharts and the occasional podcast? Other shows accomplish this quite easily without sacrificing quality or excitement. This is all just more of the same crap: smoke and mirrors, shell games and in the end, just plain nonsense.
If they ever give us the real answers to this pathetic excuse of what this show has become and they are at least good (if not great), who will be satisfied? It’s like if you were on a 9-hour flight to Italy and had the worst turbulence imaginable with everyone puking their guts out for hours, but in the end you landed safely in a beautiful country. The end result may be nice, but if much / the majority of the ride was terrible, how satisfying was the journey in the end?

C'mon Marc, stop sugar coating it and tell us how you really feel! Can't really say I disagree although I've been convinced since season 3 that its just a long shaggy dog story that they are making up as they go along, so I'm pretty used to it by now. I was surprised that they would stoop so low as to have Juliet be alive just so she could have another dramatic death. Probably the weakest thing I've seen in a long time.

Generally enjoyed ep 1 and was disappointed by 2 but thank you for this. Thought I was the only one who thought they played Juliet's death to, well, death and thereby killed what emotion the season 5 finale death scene possessed. The writers should really learn to leave certain things alone, particularly when they get them right. Was just getting over them showing us Jack's count to 5 scene with Daddy giving him a timeout and all.
And what the hell did they have her talking about going to get coffee for...was that supposed to be poignant? Was an epic fail to me. Should have left it alone.
Alternate reality idea is terrible and something they claimed they would never do. I was finally looking forward to getting pure 'on island' season but no we have to watch a reality that we all know isn't going to have a huge impact on the show. Lame.
I find it pretty unreal that they are setting things like this up in the final season when they have 50 million questions to answer and its becoming clear that we're only gonna get 1 million of them answered.
Well, the one thing that really bugged me was the beginning. I thought it could have been done with more originality and intensity. We see Jack speaking with the airline attendant and then discussing things with Rose during the turbulence. That seemed fine enough, but what bugged me was the sudden drop into the water. Not very shocking or surprising, I could actually guess what I was going to see as the camera went into the water, it was just that obvious because jumping into the water happened out of the blue for no apparent reason...
My expecation for the season premiere opening scene is very high, I guess I can't get over the season premiere opener for Season 2 or 3.
What would have been more interesting was having Jack looking out the window and then the camera switching to a boat/yacht in the ocean, with one of the crew members looking up at the Oceanic flight 815 flying very high in the sky (Something like this: http://www.photoeverywhere.co.uk/tra..._trail2608.jpg).
Another crew member could then start yelling, "What's that, what's that" pointing at an object in the water. One of the crew members could jump in with scuba gear to pull it out (it could be a large wooden ankh, or part of a volkswagon door, or something). The scuba crew member could either put his/her head in the water to investigate further, or the camera could simply pan into the water and THEN the camera goes to depict the island under water.
Or, same scene as above, but instead of it being just a typical boat, the boat could be a research vessel with oceanographers and marine biologists. They capture a shark swimming and pull it in for some reason (e.g. for some sort of research with the intent to release). They then see the Dharma symbol on it and ask to each other "What's that? The camera could then pan into the water, so on and so forth...
Just some ideas, I just thought showing the island completely underwater could have been done better.
I wish they had left Juliet's expected death in the Season 5 finale alone. It was a tear-jerking poignant few moments between James and Juliet. Having her character survive the Incident and then die in this season's opening episode really cheapened the previous scene and made Juliet's death much less tragic.
Many more questions were raised and not very many were answered. I was so hoping that Darlton would somehow prove me wrong that they weren't just making stuff up as they went along as happened in Alias. The last season of that series made no sense.
I think we had been promised "no parallel universes"; I'm not sure if the promise included no alternate timelines. The alien spaceship shown on the back of Rose's magazine ... sigh ... it's going to end with aliens.
