I think we had been promised "no parallel universes"; I'm not sure if the promise included no alternate timelines. The alien spaceship shown on the back of Rose's magazine ... sigh ... it's going to end with aliens.
Yea but parallel,alt-timeline, flash sideways, its all the same idea. The producers were ripping on Heroes a while ago on a podcast for the way they do time travel and they are doing a very similar thing right now and it baffles me. They also said there wasn't going to be time travel or aliens. So yea ET is going to be phoning home very soon i think.
When the guy tried making a circle of ash (or whatever) to protect himself from Fake Locke/Smokey what did Smokey do? He threw an object to break the circle.
Did that guy really not think that could be done? Did he really not know that although Smokey couldn't cross the circle, he could throw something and break it? Whoever came up with this protective magic circle of ash didn't realize an object could be used to break it?
Furthermore, remember the same circle of ash was used around the cabin? So we're to believe this same ingenious idea of simply using an object to break the circle was never thought of? Somehow I managed to think of it when I saw that episode (and posted the idea on this forum).
Colin, that's not what I saw (though I could be wrong). I saw the guy make a circle of ash and then Smokie smashed a giant freakin' rock over the guy's head to force him out of the circle which, in my opinion, is definitely NOT lame. More like badass.

You're right and I was wrong. I just went back and rewatched it.
I think it was in my mind that Smokey threw something and broke the circle of ash because when the ash was seen previously around the cabin many people were saying why couldn't whatever wanted in or out just throw something to break the circle. It was also pointed out at the time that if the ash was so important what was stopping an animal from breaking the circle as it walked by. As you can tell, I find the whole idea of a protective circle of ash to be stupid and impractical.
And what exactly did the guys going in the statue after Fake Locke think they were going to do with guns? They obviously knew Fake Locke wasn't human and that they were dealing with some kind of magic, otherworldly being.
... I was surprised that they would stoop so low as to have Juliet be alive just so she could have another dramatic death. Probably the weakest thing I've seen in a long time.
This really bothered me....it felt "leftover" from the season finale and a huge waste of time.

The entire idea of ash circles is so incredibly stupid. Smokey doesn't even touch the frickin ground. What's up with all this voodoo stuff, and what happened to "science or pseudo science"?
I was very disappointed by the season opening. Once again it has raised many more questions than it has provided answers, and I'm starting to think that most of Lost simply will not be explained at all.
My dissatisfaction boils down to two things. As has been said, Juliets entire appearance and digging her out just so Jim can kiss her for the last time so cheapened the scene I didn't even tear up. Bad! Secondly, the whole other reality thing. The people on the plane are total strangers to me. It was fun to watch two times to notice the changes, but I don't know these people. They are not the people who have come to my home each week all these years! Why should I care about them? So basically the only part I liked were the island parts where they continued the show I have been watching all thses years.

Right before Sawyer kisses Juliet they have this exchange:
Juliet: James, kiss me. Sawyer: You got it Blondie.
This dialogue sounds like it was written by the guy from "Nash Bridges"... oh wait, it was.
Sometimes Lost has incredibly cheesey dialogue. The Sawyer-Juliet exchange actually made me chuckle as I was watching.
Things that I hated or thought were laughably ridiculous:
--How many times did we see Juliet fall down the shaft and hit the bomb, between the previouslies and the episode? Was it four times? Was there not enough new material for this episode?
--How on earth did she survive the fall/blast/time jump? After spending so much time on her death in last season's finale, it was anticlimactic to bring her back and spend yet more time. And this scene was far cheesier than the last one--it was a greasy overkill. Again, was there not enough new material for this episode?
--The Temple. Ridiculously huge. Apparently a short walk from the Swan, which was a short walk from the beach, and yet again, our Losties never saw it. Is the Temple, like Brigadoon, only visible occasionally?
--A fresh crowd of people whom neither we nor the Losties have ever seen before. Do they all have invisibility cloaks?
--And fresh new people whom we're apparently supposed to trust and believe. Why?
--And fresh new people inexplicably speaking Japanese. What is the point of this? Is it just so yet more time can be wasted by having the character speak in Japanese, then have the speech translated into English? Again, was there not enough new material for this episode? Even without the speaking in Japanese we'd have figured out the guy's nationality, and it would have been enough of a WTF. Or is his translator played by someone's nephew, and this is a way to give him a speaking part on Lost?
I didn't love it because:
-The "leader" of the temple read a note from Jacob claiming that if Sayid was not saved there would be trouble. After Sayid "passed away" the "leader" calmly went to do a little gardening. In a time of imminent doom??? A form of relaxation perhaps.
-Were we supposed to be blown away when fake "Locke" walks by dead Locke. Didn't we already know there were two Lockes at the end of season 5.
-More of Kate running from the law. More of Sawyer glaring at Jack. A continuos loop of events. This feels like a Rousseau recording.
