PosseGal, Kate wasn't really looking for a message from Sawyer (in my opinion). She was looking for something else, probably something she can use to escape punishment. (If nothing else, if she found out how rich Hurley is, she can ask him to hire her F. Lee Bailey or someone. )
Yeah, but if you read the comments about this episode you'll see many viewers, like me, thought that Kate's comment to Sun indicated genuine affection for Sawyer.
If it was, as you speculate, a lie to cover the fact that she was looking through the notes for something else, the scene should have played differently. Maybe Kate could have used a different facial expression or stammered or something to indicate she was fibbing (you know, the same thing my kid does when I ask him on Sunday afternoon if he has done all his homework for the weekend).
The way the scene played, it really did look like Kate was desperately trying to find a note from Sawyer....but I totally get your point, and I suspect you are right.
I think it's safe to assume that the bear was not carried by Walt. Had it been Walt, Jin would have said something. He didn't. Not even a facial expression of recognition.

I think Kate does feel genuine affection for Sawyer. She's the only one he's really opened up to at all, and they've got a lot in common. But I think her display of affection that that moment in time was meant to throw Sun off the trail of her real intentions.

I have a feeling that Kate is a much better liar than your son is.

I was really disapointed that the whole "Michael runs off looking for Walt, & Jin and Eco follow" thing fell flat on it's arse! It would have been so cool if they had started a multi - episode arc where they find the others' camp & come up with a way to sneak in & take Walt back - leading to a true war between our people & the others!
Instead, Jin basicalyy tells Michael: "Dont worry - you'll find him!"
Still - I'm expecting GREAT GREAT things from episodes 6 & 7! I just saw this as a "filler" episode.

Overall, I thought this epi was above average. But I don't need super action-packed moments every week, that would get redundant and wouldn't make us love/hate the characters. I enjoyed the flashbacks, they totally made me change my opinion of Jin. He rocks. And Mr. Eko is a great new addition to the show and getting to "know" him a little this episode was great. It contradicted everything I expected from him based on the last episodes. I think this was a good epi also b/c you see the "others' or we are supposed to think it is them but not enough to give anything away. I think you need a few epi's of build up and stuff to make questions and then they answer things later on. After rewatching season one on dvd, some of my less fave eps from last season, now seeing how it all ties in, I realize every epi has something important to offer the viewer.
I thought it was very good and I enjoyed it - but heck, I enjoy ALL of the episodes of LOST regardless of whether or not anything mind-boggling happens.
I really like the Mr. Eko character. When we first met him, he seemed angry and violent; now we know that he is a man of great character, bravery and sympathy. He still went into the jungle with Jin to find Michael even after Jin hit him and knowing that the Others are out there and what they're capable of. I'm really looking forward to learning more about this character.
I loved the Sun and Jin flashback scenes. What a sweet couple. I want them to find their way back to each other now more than ever.
Loved the Sun and Hurley scene! Sun was sitting there so elegant and dignified while Hurley told her the story of his dog pooping $1.35 - classic Hurley!!!! Stuff like this is priceless and it really adds to my viewing pleasure.
I'm more curious than ever about the Others. Who are they and how did they get on the island? Why did they kill the other "tailies"?
I just wanted to mention how appropriate the title of this episode is…..as I watched this episode the same day that I lost my brown leather shoes. And I found them the following day. =)
Anyways….one thing that I noted from this episode….Jin’s friend was reading his horoscope from a Chinese book, not a Korean book. Also…the application form when Jin was at the job interview as a hotel doorman….all the words were written in Chinese, not Korean. Weird… I like Jin in the flashbacks. Humble.
Jae Lee just disgusts me somehow. He leads Sun to thinking that he has feelings for her. And when she begins to fall for him- he tells her that he has a fiancé in America and he is going to marry her. Then, as we know from season 3, after breaking Sun’s heart- he goes ahead to have an affair with her even though he knows that she is already married.
I do notice that Sun seems to gets along fine with everyone on the island. Which is great =)
One thing I have to elaborate from the flashbacks….Sun’s mother doing some matchmaking for her is still a typical thing to do in certain Asian cultures. Not all though…as Asia is also becoming more modernized. But yes….in some Asian countries, matchmaking still occurs. The women are forced to marry early for fear that they might become too old to get married if marriage is delayed.
The entire episode is rather slow moving, I’ve to admit. In fact, I realize that the whole episode is about searching for something:- Michael searching for his son Walt, and Sun searching for her wedding ring.
