Have they no love of mystery ? Sure they might hav guessed that Dave was not really there at least not in a physical sense but there couldn't have been all that many who guessed that Libby was in the same asylum. And hey, just the 100,00 kilowatt smile on Jin's face when Hurley tore into Sawyer would have been enough to bring the episode to the above average side for me.
We have a deeper understanding of what makes Hurley tick. A real creepy feeling that all of the survivors of Oceanic 815 have something greater than the Others to be afraid of. The fake Henry Gale is scared. I know he is supposed to be a good liar but I think he really is scared and it's not Zeke he's frightened of.
We love mistery. That's why we watch Lost. But it's the ISLAND mistery I'm craving for, not the problems Hurley has. We knew he had a food problem. The imaginary friend is new, but added nothing to the overall story. Jin's smile had nothing to add in the long term, the whole scene only gave a comical relief feeling. Jin shouldn't have the power to take Hurley off, anyway, he's 1/3 his size..
All in all, worst ever for me, now that I rewatched it. It's just so empty...all-hurley episode, and no big picture showing.
I did not like the epi at all. I normally love the character development, but this epi was SO predictable. One of the reasons I love Lost is because it lets you make connections yourself, if you can pick up on them, and is pretty unpredictable. I knew from the get-go that Hurley's "friend" was imaginary. I also didn't like the last shot with Libby. I thought they would have shown her in a less in-your-face way.
This is the first epi that I can say I really did not like.
As someone who takes clonazepam for anxiety I was pleased that Jorge pronounced the word correctly--twice! when asking Sawyer if he had any in his meds.stash (he must not know that Jack would be the one to ask now). Many medical people mangle the pronounciation of that word so props to Jorge.
I gave this epi. a below average for Lost rating as I too, judge Lost episodes against previous Lost episodes--not against teevee shows in general. We are dealing with a higher standard here.
What bothered me enough to not feel that this was a stellar epi. were a series of little things.
I didn't think we needed to see Sawyer get his *** kicked--again--for being one.The fat man squishing the normal-sized guy has been done to death. Hauling it out here was just another cliche, even though it was amusing. It was going for the cheap laugh.
The huge glass jar of peanut butter falling from Hurley's backpack was unrealistic as peanut butter has come in plastic jars for at least twenty years. I know it was a plot device but it caused me to step out of the story momentarily and think "glass jar?"
It was very unrealistic for Libby to encourage Hurley to destroy a large quantity of food to relieve himself of guilt. There were at least a couple of other options that would have given him resolution like say, maybe confronting the truth and sharing the food with the other Losties?
Also, why did "Dave" keep running away from Hurley when he claimed to be there to help him?
I must disagree with a comment up thread that we now have another Lostie who has killed someone.
Hurley (as far as we know) has not killed anyone. He was unlucky enough to be the one who stepped out on a grossly overloaded balcony and have it buckle. It did not buckle from Hurley's weight per se--it did so from the many people that were alredy overloading it. If two more people had stepped out on it just prior to Hurley, they would've been the ones to take it down.
As always, there were good scenes in the episode, with the Evan Handler (Dave) and Jorge's scenes in particular being very nicely done. Kudos to both actors.
I'm not digging the Libby and Hurley relationship. He seems desperate and I don't trust her so the prospect of the two of them together makes me uneasy.
Perhaps that is a good thing though as much of Lost's intent is to bring about that reaction.
-i find it intesting that the majority polled that they liked the episode, but those who disliked it are the ones who have by far the more posts, as can be evidenced by comparing the "i loved it" thread to the "eh could have been better" thread.
-i thought the jar was plastic as there was no shattering sound, it was just very big and landed on a rock.
-the libby/hurley relationship seems creepy to me because they have barely met, and seem to have nothing in common. he is jovial and open and interested in music and TV sort of stuff and VERY working class, while she is an older distant psycologist, probably upper middle class, and wouldn't seem to share any common interests with him.

I think a lot of people that liked the episode , just liked it because it's Lost and they like every episode. I also think a perceived bad episode brings up a lot more passion in people , because they want every episode to be amazing.
I hope they don't try to make Hubby into the new Shayid. Shannon/Sayid were never given enough screen time to make their romance connect with the majority of the audience. I think Hurley and Libby will be in love very soon and it will make a lot of people groan.
Usually people who like an episode show up once and say "I liked it' and moved on. People who don't like an episode usually hang around to explain what it was they didn't like and discuss it's shortcomings with each other.
There's only so many ways you can say "I loved it!"
I rate an episode by how many times I re-watch it. It's nearly Wednesday and I only watched "Dave" twice . However, it was much better than the some of the eps dealing with the Tailies.
Now if they'd only bring Desmond back, or spend any time even discussing him, I'd wear out my DVR watching it over and over!

Quite true. I have participated in both types of threads, and even though I absolutely loved Lockdown, I only posted once in the "Loved it!" thread. Contrast that with my dozens of posts in any of the "Eh, could have been better" threads I've participated in.
